Albion Environmental is celebrating the European Week for Safety and Health at Work by offering our clients the opportunity of a FREE HEALTH and SAFETY AUDIT on their activities during the European Week to raise awareness on these issues.
Health and safety performance in the waste and recycling industry is one of the worst in the UK. Although it accounts for only 0.6% of employees it still accounts for 2.8% of reported injuries to employees.
In 2011/2012 waste and recycling industry in the UK:
- The rate of reported three day injuries is almost five times that in agriculture or construction.
- Almost a third of the fatalities (29%) are due to employees being struck by vehicles.
- About a third (35%) of reported major injuries are due to slips and trips.
- In 2012, there were over 300 fires. These fires can sometimes burn for days and even weeks and involve the commitment of significant firefighting resources.
- Additionally, a total of 16 people died in 2012/2013 in the waste and recycling industry.
Just anticipating the risks and implementing sensible safety measures, we will be able to save lives and prevent injuries.
