Digital Waste Tracking
Frequently Asked Questions
Digital Waste Tracking - FAQ
What is Digital Waste Tracking (DWT)?
Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) is a UK Government initiative to create a single, centralised digital system for recording and tracking waste movements. It is designed to replace many paper-based processes and make it easier to record, share and monitor waste information throughout the waste management chain.
Why is Digital Waste Tracking being introduced?
Digital Waste Tracking is being introduced to provide greater visibility and control over waste, from the point it is created through to its final destination.
Will paper Waste Transfer Notes disappear?
No. Paper waste transfer notes can still be used, but the information they contain will need to be recorded in the Digital Waste Tracking Service. The long-term intention is for Digital Waste Tracking to replace many existing paper-based waste records, reducing the reliance on paper whilst enabling waste movements to be tracked digitally.
What information will need to be recorded?
Although requirements will vary depending on the type of waste and your particular role in the waste chain, organisations will generally need to record:
- Details of the producer, carrier and receiving site
- Dates and times of waste movements
- Description of the waste
- Waste classification
- Quantity of waste
- Collection and transfer details.
How will DWT affect my business?
Most organisations will need to review their current processes, train staff, and ensure they have appropriate, compliant systems in place to record and submit information digitally. Businesses that rely on paper forms or offline processes are likely to face the most significant challenges.
