Albion’s ABC’s of Waste Management – N

     Non-Hazardous Waste

Scotland produces in the circa 12.5 million tonnes of controlled waste per annum some 95% of this or more than 11,800,000 tonnes is considered Non Hazardous. Construction and Demolition waste is the single largest contribution with the rest being generated from other industrial, and household sources.
In line with Duty of Care requirements, it is a legal requirement that all waste must be classified correctly before being transported. This classification will use the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes and requires the holder to take all reasonable steps to describe the waste in manner which will allow for its safe handling and management.

Non Hazardous waste must be accompanied by a Waste Transfer Note contains the following information:
• Name of the waste producer
• The name of the person you are passing the waste on to (carrier) and their status (carriers registration number/exemption)
• The address of where the waste was passed to the other person, and the date/time of transfer (normally, the premises where the waste is generated)
• A description of the waste being passed on
• The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) code for the waste
• A description of how the waste is contained e.g. number and volume of containers,
• Your signature and declaration that you have applied the waste hierarchy and the signature of the person to whom you have passed the waste

It’s worth remembering that it’s illegal to mix non-hazardous and hazardous waste or, two types of hazardous waste together.
