Falkirk Council Waste Analysis Data

Albion Environmental completed a compositional waste analysis for Falkirk Council in February 2014 to study the contents of their Green Bin (residual waste). The work was carried out to assess the quantities of materials which could still be recycled from this collection.

The data has helped Falkirk Council plan changes to their Green Bin collection which has now moved from two weekly to a three weekly collection. The data has also been used to provide promotional information to members of the public to encourage an increase in recycling within the Council area.

The work carried out was part of a three stage compositional analysis. The first stage was completed in September 2013 to assess the contents of the Green Bin. The second stage was completed in February 2014 to assess if a targeted marketing information programme was effective in increasing recycling rates. The third stage will be completed in July 2014 to assess the effects of moving to a three weekly residual waste collection.

The methodology used for the study was the Zero Waste Scotland publication ‘Guidance on the Methodology for Waste Compositional Analysis For local authorities commissioning waste compositional analysis of municipal waste’. A sample of 100 households was selected based on Tax Bands to give a socio-economic profile.

The data from the analysis showed that 60% of items in the Green Bin could have potentially been recycled.
