Background
This one day course (minimum 6 hours) is jointly awarded with Energy & Utility skills. Aligned against the SWITCH Competency Framework, the course has been developed through consultation with industry and is a passport scheme designed to provide evidence of and ensure that individuals can demonstrate the appropriate level of knowledge, understanding & behavioural awareness in relation to Health & Safety across the Energy & Utilities and Waste Management Industries.
This passport is affiliated with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme and allows workers to access controlled sites without the need to hold a separate card.
Objectives
To provide knowledge allowing delegates to demonstrate understanding and competence in the following:
- Site health & safety
- Awareness of environmental law
- Risk awareness & reporting mechanisms
Training Methods
Participative; with a mix of lecturing, activities and discussions. Course slides will be used and delegates are advised to make notes in the delegate workbook.
Who Should Attend
Staff who require access to operational sites. This can include all levels of operatives through to supervisors and managers. The course is designed for temporary and permanent staff. Please note there is strict course limit of 12 delegates per session.
Course Content
The scheme consists of 8 modules in total covering core health, safety and environmental topics outline below.
There are 7 mandatory modules with an optional 8th for the Waste Management industry.
- Introduction to the waste sector
- Legislation, regulation and company procedures
- Health & Safety in the workplace
- What happens if things go wrong?
- Occupational Hazards & Consequences
- Onsite risks & Precautions
- The environment
- Waste collection: Drivers and operatives (waste specific module)

Confirmation of Learning
Confirmation of learning is achieved by completion of course exercises and multiple choice modular assessment.
Qualification
Candidates who complete the 7 module course and pass the necessary exam will be eligible for registration and receive the category “SHEA (Waste & Resource Management)”. Candidates completing all 8 modules will be able to register for “SHEA (Waste & Resource Management)” & “Waste Collection: Drivers & Operatives”
