Welcome to the Team – Calum Tait!

We are delighted to welcome the newest addition to the Albion team. Calum has joined us as an Environmental Technician and has answered some of our questions to help get to know him better!

Calum Tait

Environmental Technician

Favourite Quote: “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get”

Job Role: As an Environmental Technician I undertake out a wide range of tasks.  These include environmental monitoring (landfill gasses, surface water, and groundwater), site investigations, and waste analysis – as well as whatever needs to be done!  The work is country wide and often in interesting places.  In the office I help with collating and reporting data as well as preparing for projects.

Experience: I am a recent graduate of the University of Glasgow, where I achieved a Geography BSc degree.  At university I studied many areas that are relevant to my job, such as conservation, sustainability, river pollution, soils, and learnt relevant computer skills.  I worked for Albion on a short term Waste Analysis project, to initially see whether I was interested in the sector.  I enjoyed the work and was interested to hear about what else the company was involved in.  So, when the opportunity came to work full time I jumped at the chance!

Favourite project I have worked on: I have only been working with Albion for a short time but have already been involved in a variety of projects.  My favourite so far would be groundwater and surface water monitoring at a ex-mining site in East Ayrshire.  The sun was shining and I was surrounded by lovely scenery!

Get to know me: I love travelling and seeing new places, be that in Scotland or further away, and I spend as much time as I can exploring.  This means that I enjoy the travel involved in my job.  In the summer I like to wild camp, if the weather behaves!  I am an animal lover and used to work in an animal rescue centre – although sadly now I don’t have enough time for any pets.  I like to keep myself fit and enjoy hillwalking, running and cycling – although living in Scotland this does tend to be quite seasonal!

When I’m not working you’ll find me: Hopefully exploring a sunny city somewhere abroad; more likely spending time with friends and family somewhere more local!

Senior Consultant

Favourite Quote: “Persistence can change failure into extraordinary achievement” – Matt Biondi

Job Role: As a senior consultant, my main role is to provide support to clients with their planning permission applications and various licence applications. As part of the team at Albion, I also provide support to the wider consultancy team.

Experience: I am an environmental engineer with over 20 years of experience having worked both in the UK and the Netherlands. I have managed a variety of environmental disciplines (i.e. contaminated land, hydrogeology, asbestos and waste management). Additionally, I have experience with Quality Management Systems.

Favourite project I’ve worked on at Albion: Although I have only been with Albion for a short period, I have already worked on a variety of projects. My favourite project has been assisting a client with the planning application to develop a combustion unit to produce bio-char. I really enjoy managing the various specialists to undertake their surveys and assessments.

Get to Know Me: I used to be a competitive swimmer and won the Dutch National Championship when I was 15. As a result, I was selected for the National Team to compete and train. Unfortunately, swimming wasn’t a professional sport at that time and I chose my education over extra training hours in the swimming pool.

I currently enjoy running, cycling, hill walking and still swim from time to time.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me.. standing on the touchline watching my son play for The Honest Men U18s.

Charity Miles Challenge

Albion Environmental reached its 20th anniversary in 2022, and as part of our celebrations, we decided to run a team fitness challenge throughout the month of August to raise funds for local Ayrshire charity, Whiteleys Retreat.

Many people familiar with the company will know our director Alasdair Meldrum, who started the business from his spare room in 2002. Over the past 20 years, Alasdair has expanded the business taking on his first official employee in 2005, and now operating with a team of 12. Alongside building the business, Alasdair has always been a keen runner and has taken part in some extreme endurance races over the years. So, when deciding to complete a charity challenge, running was the obvious option.

The next step was to choose the team target and plan the challenge. Conveniently, Alasdair’s next big event was the Dragon’s Back Race, where he was running 236 miles over 6 days at the beginning of September. So that was the goal set, the team were to run, walk or cycle a collective 230 miles each week in August, to get a taste of the distance Alasdair would be covering. The team got their running shoes on and hit the target week after week, bringing children and dogs along to join in the fun, and even getting their miles in while on holiday!

The goal was to reach 920 miles by the end of August, aiming to cover an average of 230 miles each week. By the 31st August, the team had run, walked or cycled 1155 miles! Now, with the staff challenge complete, it was time for Alasdair to take on the Dragon’s Back Race!

After 6 gruelling days, covering extreme terrain and some tough weather conditions, Alasdair made it from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle! He covered 236 miles and 57,000ft of elevation over the 6 days, and completed to Dragon’s Back Race! Alasdair talks all about his race experience in his own blog, for those keen to find out more.

The Albion team worked together, with some friendly competition, to reach the target miles and raise some money for Whiteley’s Retreat, and we couldn’t have done it without the support and kind donations from our clients, friends, and family!

Some of our team with the Whiteleys Retreat Fundraising Kit!

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated to a wonderful charity and given the team support and encouragement. The fundraising page is open until the end of September, if you would still like to donate.

We Invest in People!

Albion Environmental are now an accredited Investors in People Silver organisation.

Albion Environmental are delighted to announce we have achieved a Silver Investors in People Award, recognising the support, learning and improvement the company offers our staff. One of our company’s key values is ‘Commitment to People’ which involves delivering an outstanding service to both clients and staff. A great recognition for the company in the year we reached our 20th Anniversary.

As the company has grown over the last 20 years, our people have grown with us and we intend to continue promoting an environment of learning and development, as well as encouraging a balanced approach to work and life. Becoming an accredited Investors in People organisation allows us to utilise the support offered by the program and continually improve our management of people.

The company has been on an impressive journey over the last 20 years and has learned that people are the priority of any organisation’s success. Company Director Alasdair Meldrum started the company from his home office in 2002, and here’s what he had to say about the growth of the company and achieving a Silver Investors in People Award.

“I am delighted to achieve Silver Investors in People Award for Albion. This is a reflection of the hard work and improvements we have put in place over the years to promote an environment of learning and development, while encouraging a balanced approach to work and life for our staff.

The assessment process delivered by Rob Moore from Remarkable was very comprehensive and thorough and included all members off the team, ensuring views were received from across the business.

Our Silver Investors in People Award is an award all our staff should be proud off and I value their contribution to achieving this award”.

Achieving the Investors in People Silver accreditation is only the beginning of our IIP journey, meaning we will continue to implement these good practices and maintain our standards as the company grows.

Job Title: Office Administrator/HR/ BMS Co-ordinator

Job Role: In my current role with Albion I am  involved with the up keep and administration of the Business Management System (BMS) standards and accreditation together with tenders, social media, and a range of administrative duties to support the consultancy and business development team. My HR responsibilities include updating all staff files and training records as well and coordinating recruitment campaigns and assisting with inducting and integrating new staff.

Experience:I have over 25 years’ experience in the private sector having worked for a cross section of major blue-chip companies. My key skills and experiences are in organisational, administrative and coordination roles, mainly providing support to senior teams, directors and Corporate Boards.

Favourite project I’ve worked on: Whilst colleagues have specific key projects to focus on, I am a little different in my role as an administrator providing support across the company. However, I have enjoyed taking on more responsibility and ownership of the Albion’s Business Management System (BMS) which in itself has allowed me to assist with support for both business development and customer support in this area.

Although not directly Albion related, I also enjoy playing a key role in the administration and marketing of the Scottish Waste Industry, Training Competency, H&S Forum ( SWITCH). This role focusses on communicating and liaising with Waste Sector organisations across Scotland to provide a focus and leadership for all aspects of health and safety as well as education, training and competence issues across the waste sector.

Get to Know Me:I used to be a member and race in the  Portsmouth Schoolboy Motorbike Scrambling club and was the only girl in my time to participate. I won rider of the year but not for my ability but more for my progression from a novice to be able to compete with confidence in a then “boy’s” world.

In my latter years I trained at Highbury College of Technology and qualified as a chef. My 3-week placement was at Windsor Castle. During this time one of my key achievements was coming runner up in the Hotelympia Catering competition held while I was completing my training at college.G

When I’m not working, you’ll find me at the gym or walking my dogs around the beautiful Ayrshire countryside. On a rainy day I love nothing more than a good jigsaw whilst watching black and white movies and period dramas on Netflix.
