Albion’s ABC’s of Waste Management – M

M    Materials Recovery Facility

A Materials Recovery Facility, or an MRF as it is more commonly referred to, is a specialised facility in which household waste is collected and sorted or separated into different types. These may include:

  • Plastic
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Textiles
  • Paper

This segregation process can be done with both manual and mechanical techniques. For example, many recyclables such as plastics may be separated through manual handling as the waste passes on a conveyor belt. Another method of segregation is Magnetic Separation which targets and lifts steel cans.

Once recovered, the materials then have value and therefore can be sold on the open market.
