Case Study - Provision of Task Based Risk Assessments for Local Authority Client
Background
Albion Environmental Ltd specialise in providing Health and Safety Consultancy Services to our construction and waste management clients.
We were contracted by a local authority to update all their risk assessments for their land services operation. The authority had over 200 risk assessments in place and a significant amount of time was being expending ensuring they were reviewed and staff were inducted in all the relevant risk assessments.
Our Approach
We identified key supervisory staff for each department and worked with them to identify the following -
- Existing risk and control measures in place
- Review and audit of existing working practice
- Drafting Task Based Risk assessment
- Hold meeting with Supervisory staff where they identified the control measures to reduce the risk for each Task Based Risk Assessment
- Agree and Finalise each Task based Risk assessment
- Induct all staff on relevant Task based Risk Assessment
All these services are provided by our highly experienced and qualified staff.
Our Delivery
Delivery of these services was designed around existing working conditions. Supervisory staff were involved at all stages which helped identify areas of good practice which could be expanded across the service. Task Based Risk assessments were completed on excel and had an automatic colour coding system whereby task could not go ahead if it was shown in red. Supervisors had to modify the work activity to alter the colour from red to either amber or green.

Results
This local authority had over 200 risk assessments in place prior to us commencing this work. On completion they now have five task based risk assessments which cover a range of activities from grave digging, refuse collection to grounds maintenance.
Supervisors were very involved with identifying activities and reducing risk in a practical and easily understood way. This then makes it easier for them to pass this onto staff.
The result has been a change in company Health and Safety culture. The benefits to the client are significant with increased efficiency, and overall, a safer and healthier workforce.
