Albion Environmental Ltd completes more CQA Engineering Works

Albion undertook the CQA work for GR Service Company’s new borehole installations in Falkirk in conjunction with Halcrow. The engineering works for the installations started in September 2005 and were complete by October 2005. The CQA work provides the assurance and validation for each of the elements of the installation. The CQA for the engineering works must ensure levels conform to the design at all stages of construction as well as the quality and consistency of all materials used. This information was essential to allow GR Services and there consultant Halcrow to prepare and submit their PPC application.

Albion Environmental Ltd management have taken the proactive step of identifying the need to develop & streamline their existing business practices to ensure they continue to be a lead player in their industry. The decision to apply for certification to BS EN ISO9001 :2000 and BS EN ISO14001 :2004 will ensure the future growth of the company and the inevitable changes to work practices that will occur, will be incorporated in the quality and environmental management systems thereby allowing them to meet legislative changes and their own customers' perception of "quality" issues head on. PC Passport Training Courses at LTES

Albion Environmental Ltd, in conjunction with ASM Development, is pleased to announce that training started recently for the trainees at Lomond Training and Environmental Services Ltd (LTES).
The trainees will receive 1 session of IT training per week as part of their core skills requirements. The trainees have all now been inducted and are starting the qualification at a level appropriate to their prior experience and knowledge – a key feature of the PC Passport award. The training room is fully equipped with the latest equipment and software and is available as a course venue.

Website Upgrade and Compliance Checking

Our website has a new look! ASM Development have carried out a full update on the website, www.albion-environmental.co.uk and implemented a rigorous quality check process. As well as improving the look and functionality of the site it is now fully CSS and XHTML compliant as validated by www.w3c.org. This ensures that no matter the browser you use to view the site it will display in the same way and also ensures that it meets all of the latest accessibility requirements.

Shanks (Argyll & Bute) Monitoring Reviews

As part of the monitoring contract with Shanks Argyll & Bute, Albion Environmental Ltd has prepared detailed six monthly reviews of the monitoring data recorded by Albion Environmental staff for each of the company’s four sites at Oban, Lochgilphead, Dunoon and Rothsay. The report includes analysis of landfill gas, ground water, surface water and leachate samples.
These reports form part of the extensive monitoring service Albion Environmental Ltd is pleased to offer Shanks (Argyll & Bute). It also allows Shanks (Argyll and Bute) to investigate and resolve any environmental issues as soon as possible.
CQA Engineering Work

Albion are currently undertaking the CQA work for North Ayrshire Council’s new landfill cell in Irvine in conjunction with Halcrow. The engineering works for the new cell started on 1st June 2005and is expected to be complete by September 2005. The CQA work provides the assurance and validation for each of the elements of the installation. The key areas for this are the landfill containment cell liner, containment cell leachate drainage and collection system and the perimeter surface water system. The cell is being initially lined with clay followed by a 500mm BES (Bentonite Enriched Sand) layer and finally a 2.5mm HDPE liner with a protective geotextile fleece. The CQA for the engineering works must ensure levels conform to the design at all stages of construction as well as the quality and consistency of all materials used. Levels of formation and samples of materials are taken daily throughout construction.

Successful Waste Management Licence Applications
(July 2005)
Albion Environmental Ltd continues its successful Waste Management Licence Application work with the recent issuing of Waste Management Licences for a range of companies including Luce Bay Plant Hire, Corrie Skip Hire, Stanley Brash Construction, Express Skip Hire, Lochaber Environmental Group and Henry Waste Management Ltd.
Albion Environmental Ltd has developed a support package to assist these companies in the initial set up phase. This includes providing waste acceptance procedures and training, providing Health and Safety documentation and training and completion of quarterly waste returns.

New Contracts
(July 2005)
Albion Environmental Ltd is pleased to have recently been awarded contracts to complete Waste Management Licence applications for a number of new clients. Companies include Stirling Fibre, Inverness New Start, Charlie Gray Composting and Billy Munro.
The new clients require assistance with WML application and with a number of technical issues including hazardous waste, composting and compliance with Animal By products legislation. Albion Environmental ltd is pleased to progress this work on their behalf.
WAMITAB Training and Assessment

Albion Environmental Ltd SQA / WAMITAB Centre go from strength to strength with new contracts.
Albion Environmental’s emphasis on providing training and assessment to meet the needs of the candidate (and candidate’s employer!) is paying dividends with new registrations increasing every month. Albion Environmental is now the preferred WAMITAB provider in Scotland for Sita, Shanks, WRG, Viridor and many local authorities.
We differ from other providers by providing

• Detailed induction program for all candidates.

SQA carried out a detailed audit of all the qualifications currently delivered by Albion Environmental Ltd on 18th June 2005. We are pleased to report that it was an extremely positive report, which is a compliment to the staff that have invested a lot of time and effort to ensure we deliver a quality service. Under the heading “Good Practice”, Dr. Jennifer McQuaid - Cook was pleased to note-

CIWM Waste Awareness Certificate Course

Albion Environmental Ltd is pleased to be working in partnership with ILM Highland Ltd, Alness providing Chartered Institution of Wastes Management Waste Awareness Certificate Courses.
ILM Highland Ltd have developed a program for trying to improve the waste management practices of businesses within the Ross and Cromarty area. Albion Environmental Ltd is delivering the CIWM Waste Awareness course and also providing follow up support to course candidates.

Albion Environmental Ltd is pleased to announce that Gary Ross will be joining the team in May 2005. This is the second new appointment this year and is driven by the ongoing success of Albion Environmental Ltd.
Gary has joined us from Waste Recycling Group where he was part of the environmental monitoring team. This appointment continues to strengthen the level of services provided by Albion Environmental Ltd.
COSHH 2002 RPE Face Fit Testing
(April 2005)
Albion Environmental Limited is pleased to be working with South Ayrshire Council to assist them meet their statutory obligations for Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) Face Fit Testing. South Ayrshire Council has a large number of RPE wearers (with a diverse range of RPE types) and needed a quick, cost effective solution to enable them to comply with their statutory duties under COSHH 2002.
Albion Environmental Ltd is working in partnership with South Ayrshire Council to develop a bespoke program. This program includes training up selected supervisors to train and prepare their workforce. Supervisors are provided with “Tool box talk” type training material to assist with the delivery of this information to their staff. This is then followed up by a rigorous program of face fit testing carried out by Albion Environmental Ltd.
This system has saved the council money and reduced the number of failures during testing. For further information on this service please contact us.
CIWM Waste Awareness Certificate Course

Albion Environmental Ltd was pleased to deliver two CIWM Waste Awareness Certificate Courses for Community Recycling Network for Scotland (CRNS). Courses were held at Thurso on 16th March and Fort William on 18th March.
Feed back from the candidates was very positive, and CRNS are planning on arranging more courses in the near future.

Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) Work
(March 2005)
Albion Environmental Ltd is pleased by be working for North Ayrshire Council and in partnership with Halcrow Ltd to provide CQA assistance for the new Shewalton landfill site. Work commenced in March 2005 with Albion Environmental Ltd providing CQA cover for the groundwater and gas monitoring borehole installation.
Work was completed by existing Albion Environmental Ltd staff supported by associate consultant, Wendy Owens. Wendy is a Chartered Civil engineer by trade and has extensive experience of the waste management industry. More recently she has been working with Waste Recycling Group (WRG) as their Engineering Manager for Scotland.
In addition to working as an associate for Albion Environmental Ltd, Wendy manages Wendy manages the operation of KCP Environmental Services Ltd. KCP Environmental Services has over 20 years experience in the waste management industry aimed directly at managing and maintaining the environmental infrastructure on landfill sites.
Shanks Waste Solutions Composting Facilities

Albion Environmental Ltd is proud to again be working with Shanks (Argyll and Bute) Ltd supporting their composting operations in the Argyll and Bute area.
Albion Environmental Ltd has been contracted to develop and improve the Operating Procedures and Risk Assessments in conjunction with Shanks staff to increase the efficiency and safety of the facilities.
The facilities at the Shanks Landfill sites near Oban, Lochgilphead and Dunoon have proved highly successful running at full capacity. The facilities, which receive domestic municipal solid waste from all over the Argyll and Bute area, can process 13,000 tonnes of waste per year. The process involves a mechanical separation of non-compostable waste, such as plastics and metal, before enclosed composting in atmospherically controlled bays.

Monitoring contract with Shanks (Argyll and Bute) Ltd

Albion Environmental Ltd is pleased to have secured the contract from Shanks waste solutions for the environmental monitoring of its Argyll and Bute Landfill facilities. The work will involve monitoring four sites near Oban, Lochgilphead, Dunoon and Rothesay. This increase in work has resulted in Albion Environmental Ltd recruiting a new member of staff. David Irvine is a graduate from the University of Glasgow, and we are pleased to welcome David to the company.
The monitoring, including water sampling and landfill gas analysis, is in support of PPC applications being submitted to SEPA by Shanks.
Albion Environmental Ltd is uniquely placed to do this type of work as we have qualified and competent staff who can not only complete site work but also analysis and report back on the environmental data.
