New Waste Tyre Regulations For Scottish Operators

From 30th March 2016 new waste tyre licensing rules came into effect in Scotland in a bid to clamp down on illegal operators. The new regulations require all operators who store or process waste tyres to hold a Waste Management Licence and those who are currently exempt must apply for a licence prior to 30 September 2016 or cease operations.

The new legislation supersedes the exemption which allowed operators to register with SEPA to store up to 1000 waste tyres on a site at any one time in the lead up to recovery or reuse, for a maximum period of one year. SEPA have stated that operators found to be keeping or treating waste tyres without an appropriate licence after 30 September 2016 could face a maximum penalty of £40,000 and/or a six month imprisonment.
