Basic Chainsaw Safety Course

Aim: To train operators in the safe use of Chainsaws in the "Restricted Use" role (cross cutting only on materials smaller than the length of the guide bar).

Duration: 1 Day (Approx 8 hrs)

Pre Requisites: Candidates must be over 18, physically fit and free from any medical condition which may effect their safety whilst using a chainsaw.

Objectives:

  • Understand the current PPE requirements for chainsaw use
  • Carry out pre start checks and start/stop the chainsaw safely
  • Set up and conduct a simple cross cutting operation

Course Content:

  • Legislation
  • Definition of "Restricted Use"
  • Hazards associated with chainsaws & their use
  • Chainsaw terminology
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Assessing a chainsaw task & setting up a simple work site
  • Practical assessment

Training Methods:
Participative with practical demonstrations & exercises.

Confirmation of Learning:
Is achieved by practical assessment.

Site Requirements:
Classroom facility with power and fully serviceable portable abrasive wheel machine & selection of discs/wheels.

Note: The candidates will require to be in possession of the correct PPE for the duration of the course (this includes goggles/ear defenders/gloves/dust mask)
