Waste reduction steps ‘could save Scots firms £2bn’

Waste reduction steps 'could save Scots firms £2bn'
Zero Waste Scotland says companies can make big savings by using resources more efficiently
Scottish businesses could cut costs by more than £2bn a year if they put in place simple waste reduction measures, according to Zero Waste Scotland.
The Scottish government-funded waste advice body said companies could save up to 1% of their turnover by using their resources more efficiently.
That would equate to £2.36bn if all businesses took the same approach.
Zero Waste Scotland suggested firms could cut water and effluent bills by as much as 50% and energy bills by 20%.
According to the advice body, the services sector could stand to make the biggest savings of almost £1.2bn.
It suggested companies should check for leaks, identify materials that can be reused, switch off electrical equipment and work more effectively with their supply chain by arranging deliveries on the same day as other firms in the local area.

Waste measures
The manufacturing sector could make savings of about £454m, according to Zero Waste
Scotland.
“Businesses must overcome the perception that going green adds cost – the opposite is true”    Iain Gulland Zero Waste Scotland

Manufacturers could cut costs by taking the environment into account at the design stage of a product – ensuring it will be longer lasting, reusable and recyclable at the end of its life.
Zero Waste Scotland also suggested the Scottish construction industry could see financial savings of more than £170m simply by implementing a site waste management plan at the start of a project, resulting in less waste being sent to landfill.
Director Iain Gulland said: "Businesses must overcome the perception that going green adds cost – the opposite is true.
"Those companies that have addressed their environmental performance with even small changes have measured savings in their bottom line – which could hit as much as 1% of turnover.
"Reducing waste is an ongoing process. You have to determine a benchmark against which you can measure future progress, and constantly identify cost-effective opportunities to prevent and reduce waste."
He added: "The companies that are always setting themselves new targets are the ones that save the most money."
Last year the Scottish government unveiled a multi-billion pound plan to create a "zero waste" society by the year 2025.
The zero waste plan includes tough new recycling and landfill targets over the next 15 years.

Continued Competence

Please see below a note from WAMITAB
From 1 March the Continuing Competence testing platform will be provided by Pearson VUE; the key changes in making this transition are:

·         The cost for each test is fixed at £105 and a maximum of three options can be taken at any one time. The cost for a re-test is the same; and

·         Candidates select their option(s) at the test centre and must know which options to take before entering the test centre.

As part of this transition WAMITAB has made significant enhancements to the WAMITAB web site, including the following sub-navigation extract under Continuing Competence:

·         Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): before contacting WAMITAB please read this section carefully as it will answer many of your questions about the test;

·         All waste activities: this section provides information on the different tests which are available depending on the competence you wish to maintain;

·         Previous Exemptions: this section refers to individuals who held a management role in relation to an exempt activity which now requires a permit;

·         CIWM/WAMITAB Tutorial: if you need to take a Continuing Competence test this tutorial explains how the test works and what you will see when you get to the test centre proper.  You will be asked again to take the tutorial at the beginning of your actual test to reinforce your understanding of how the test operates; and

·         Which Test?  This provides information on which option(s) to select and the syllabus for each option.  It also provides Information, Advice and Guidance to help people prepare for the test.

This information is designed to help candidates select their option(s), if appropriate, and to prepare them for the test proper. Our experience has shown that thorough preparation is the key to success.

Centres can help their candidates by looking at the information on our web site and signposting people to the FAQs etc.

Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2011

A delay to the coming into force of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2011.  These amending EP Regulations were due to come into force on 6th April 2011, subject to the approval of Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales (NAW).  The amending EP Regulations include a provision to enable the Environment Agency to make use of civil sanctions in addition to its existing enforcement powers.  Ministers have indicated that they now want to agree a cross Government position on civil sanctions for England more generally before measures in specific sets of regulations are taken forward.
They are anticipating a clearer picture to emerge early in March.  They will then lay the EP amending regulations in Parliament in Spring, with or without the civil sanctions provisions (laid later in NAW due to Assembly elections but will include civil sanctions), coming into force on the next common commencement date, 1st October 2011.  Provisions transposing two articles from the Carbon Capture and Storage Directive will come into force during the Summer.
As a reminder, the proposed changes were contained in two recent consultation documents http://defraweb/corporate/consult/env-permitting-regs/100730-env-permitting-regs-condoc.pdf / http://defraweb/corporate/consult/env-permitting-regs2010/index.htm
