Continued Competence Deadline Extenstion

Following discussions between CIWM, WAMITAB, British Metals Recycling Association, Motor Vehicle Dismantlers Association, Defra, Welsh Assembly Government and the Environment Agency an agreement has been reached to extend by 12 months the time necessary to take and pass the initial Continuing Competence test. The deadline for the initial Continuing Competence period is therefore extended to 29 February 2012.
In reaching this understanding all parties recognised that the process for maintaining competence is new to the industry and that some sectors are only just being brought within its requirements. This extension is one outcome of the pragmatic approach being adopted to deal with these issues to ensure no one is disadvantaged.
What if I have already taken my Test?
If you have already taken your test to meet the original date of 28 February 2011 then the validity of your Continuing Competence certificate will be extended by one year, which means you will have to take another test between 1 March 2012 and 28 February 2014. This ensures ‘early-adopters’ are not disadvantaged.
WAMITAB will not be issuing revised Continuing Competence certificates as the Environment Agency is aware of this extended timeframe and our database will reflect this.
What should I do if I want to make use of this extension?
To ensure we have appropriate information to manage the booking workload during the extension we require candidates to register their interest with WAMITAB before the end of February 2011. To register your interest please send an email to info.admin@wamitab.org.uk with the title ‘Extension’ and include the following information:
• Full name
• Home address
• Company name
• Name of the Continuing Competence test you intend to take.

Candidates will still need to book their own tests through the WAMITAB web site in the normal way; bookings are currently being taken up to the 28th February 2011. For bookings between 1 March 2011 and 29 February 2012 (the extended period), WAMITAB/ CIWM will provide further information on their web sites as to when bookings for these dates can be made – don’t forget to register your interest with WAMITAB if you will be needing a test within this extension.
What happens after 1 March 2012?
The two-year cycles for taking the test will recommence from 1 March 2012.
