David Cameron speaks out for safety sense

Health and Safety has been back in the headlines after David Cameron called for an end to the UK's over-the-top health and safety culture. The IOSH welcomed the Tory leader's comments as an opportunity to set the record straight and challenge some common misconceptions.

Alasdair Meldrum now a Fellow of Chartered institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM)

Alasdair Meldrum is delighted to have been granted fellowship by CIWEM. CIWEM was one of the first professional organisation which Alasdair joined when he commenced his career and has been a member since August 1997. Since then Alasdair has become a member of:
  • Chartered institute of Wastes Management (CIWM formerly IWM) since 10th April 1996
  • Institute of Leadership and management (ILM) July 2001
  • Chartered Environmentalist – Society of Environment July 2005.
Albion continues to develop and improve staff qualifications to ensure we operate to the highest standards.

Albion Assessor Celebrates Completion of 100th Certificate of Technical Competence portfolio.

100 COTC AwardsAlbion Training Manager, Craig Chandler has just completed the assessment of his one hundredth level 4 vocational qualification in Waste Management which leads to a Certificate of Technical Competence. The award was completed for Jose Cabellero of East Lothian Council.

Commenting on his achievement Craig said "I was somewhat surprised when I counted up the number of assessments I had completed and realised I was nearing 100! I have learnt a lot during the process and continue to develop and improve our system. I am particularly pleased the 100th candidate was from East Lothian Council as I know and have worked with many of their staff"

Albion has delivered COTC assessment for management staff, level 3 waste management awards for site supervisors and currently deliver a 1 day Household Waste Recycling Centre Operators course as part of East
Lothian Council’s induction process. We are also currently assessing some of their operational staff for level 2 waste management qualifications.

SQA External Verification Visit – Waste Management Awards Level 1-4

Albion is pleased with the recent External Verification visit completed by SQA on 17th December 2009. The Waste Management Awards level 1-4 awards continue to be the main vocational qualifications we deliver at Albion, and we have built up a considerable level of expertise in this area. In good practice section the External verifier noted the following –
  • Good use of photographic evidence
  • Good application of APL
  • Clear and logical portfolio building
  • A robust and effective internal verification system
  • CPD records were comprehensive, well maintained and compliant with SSC requirements
  • Good evidence of standardization activities taking place

Two-year safety campaign’s theme is maintenance

Also this month, it has been announced that maintenance is the theme of the next European Agency for Safety and Health at Work's (EU-OSHA) two year safety campaign. Speaking about the campaign at the Agency's Healthy Workplaces summit in Bilbao, EU-OSHA director Jukka Takala suggested that as Europe starts to move out of recession many machines that have been lying dormant will be brought back to life making a focus on maintenance essential.
